Single Desire: How Can I Satisfy My Desire To Rescue A Man?

If you're conflicted by the fact that you find Johnny Depps' Captain Jack Sparrow sexy, you've come to the right place. The treacherous, badly groomed pirate swoons the hearts of women despite that fact that he's most likely incapable of sustaining a long-term relationship. (Never mind the fact that he's fictional.) Recent studies suggest that women are scientifically attracted to  bad boys. Some think this tendency is heightened during ovulation when a woman may subconsciously be more likely to consider how protective a potential mate could be of offspring. (I'm sorry that I just called your future children "offspring.") (Again, never mind the fact that the bad boy tendancy might make them undependable.) I think we are, in fact, attracted to the bad boy.  But I think the reason is much simpler than science will ever uncover. I'd like to reveal it to you today so you can figure out what to do with your bad boy appetite before you end up with one that might hurt you.

Is Purity An Idol In Christian Circles?

One of my single, twenty-something team members returned from Christmas break with something of an epiphany having occurred. "I've made purity an idol in my life," she confessed. Memories of multiple blogs inserting this thought into the online Christian conversation ran through my head. Blogger Elizabeth Esther seemed to have started this snowballing conversation rolling. Rachel Held EvansBoundless, and a number of others soon posed the question on their own blogs to perpetuate the debate. Before we knew it, we were reading grandiose claims such as "Virginity: Christianity's Main Idol." Of all the myths birthed and nurtured in the critique on the purity movement, this one brought the strongest response in my spirit. It is both the most truth-founded and most deceptive of the myths. A tricky one to be certain. While I believe it's possible that purity may be an idol in your life, it is a myth that purity is an idol. Before I reveal the logical fallacy in this trendy conversation, let me give you a few test questions to see if purity has become an idol in your life.

Celebs like Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Justin Timberlake and more joined forces to collaborate on a campaign to stop men from using girls to mop up their own selfish sexual needs.  Whatever you think of the self deprecating humor they used in their commercials to raise awareness of sex trafficking, the message is loud and clear: “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls.” A watching world applauded the celebs as heroes. Sex trafficking is an issue that is important to me and very personal.  I have one adopted daughter whom we rescued out of a rape culture. And another who has chosen to be a student activitist fighting it. Her work began in one of the vilest places on the planet where girls are intentionally bred to be sold by their families into the sex industry when they turn twelve. I know what a culture that endorses rape looks like. And I despise it.

Dannah Helping NessieI have enjoyed a special connection with Nessie and her mama Scout. I was Scout's midwife when Nessie came in to the world. You can see us cleaning Nessie,—just moments old—, as a team in the picture to the left. As I was writing Get Lost last summer, I looked out the window to see Nessie was communicating clearly to her mama, Scout. That baby wanted some of the wonderful llama milk under her mother’s belly. Scout was rather intent on walking over to the mound of hay Bob was putting out at that moment. She didn’t want to stop to nurse Nessie. That was clear. She put her ears back and attempted a gentle kick, but stopped short. There have been other times where Nessie, seeming to sense that her llama mama had some place to be, bounced along beside her suppressing her need to nurse until the pair arrived at their destination. This was not one of them. Baby needed milk. I saw the reluctance in Scout. She was eager to get her share of that hay from Farmer Bob. And the other llamas can eat so quickly! I didn’t think she was going to stop. But she did. She submitted to her baby’s need. Scout’s act of kindness really spoke volumes to my heart that day.
